Five days before his first NBA game, Aday Mara became the subject of two press statements that cannot both be right. His former club in Spain says he is still under contract and cannot be cleared to play without its agreement. His new club says no clearance is required at all. The Oklahoma City Thunder open their season on Tuesday in San Antonio, and the 7-foot-3 centre is expected to be in uniform while the lawyers argue.

Update, October 20: Mara played. The section “What happened on debut night?” at the end of this page carries the debut outcome, his line, and the state of the dispute now that the Thunder have acted on their position.

What is Zaragoza claiming about Mara?

Ownership, in effect. Basket Zaragoza announced on Friday that it has received no request for Mara’s international transfer and would oppose one until a financial settlement over his departure is reached, because it holds his playing rights under a contract it says covers the 2026-27 season, Rookie Wire reports. Eurohoops reports the club has warned the NBA, the Thunder, FIBA and the Spanish federation that Mara needs a formal Letter of Clearance to be eligible. The local paper Heraldo de Aragon reported the position first, and Eurohoops notes the club confirmed it in an official release. This is not a rumour about a buyout figure; it is a club stating, on the record, that the player’s registration belongs to it.

What do the Thunder say in response?

That the paperwork Zaragoza is demanding does not exist in this case. A Thunder spokesperson said Friday that Mara last played three years of NCAA college basketball and, as advised by the NBA, no clearance from the Spanish team is required for him to play in the NBA, HoopsHype reports. Rookie Wire reports the club’s position plainly: Mara does not need the Spanish club’s approval and is cleared to play. So the standoff is total. One side says a transfer process must begin and will be fought; the other says there is nothing to begin. The gap between those positions is exactly the kind of eligibility fog this desk has tracked elsewhere this month, in a different key: Golden State spent a week unable to say where Kristaps Porzingis even was before his situation resolved into a health timeline rather than a paperwork one.

Why did this not block his college career?

Because college basketball lives outside the system Zaragoza is invoking. The NCAA is not part of the FIBA ecosystem, so a Letter of Clearance is not required for a student-athlete, Eurohoops explains. Zaragoza’s own argument depends on that: the club says Mara’s contract was never terminated when he left for UCLA, because FIBA regulations did not require an international transfer for the NCAA move, Rookie Wire reports. In other words, the three college seasons that the Thunder cite as the reason no clearance is needed are, in Zaragoza’s reading, the reason the contract simply waited him out. Both sides are using the same three years as their best evidence, which is why the case has already been through litigation without a resolution, as Heraldo de Aragon reported via Eurohoops.

Where does the dispute come from?

From a hometown club and a teenager who left it. Mara is from Zaragoza, signed with the club in 2020, spent two years in its academy and reached the senior team for the 2022-23 season, Rookie Wire reports, making the ACB’s All-Young Players team in 2023, For The Win reports. At 18 he ended the deal unilaterally and moved to the United States. Zaragoza claims the contract ran through 2027, Eurohoops reports, and it disputed the college move at the time too, threatening his eligibility before he was cleared days before the UCLA season began, For The Win reports. He played two seasons at UCLA, transferred to Michigan, won a national title and was named the Big Ten’s Defensive Player of the Year, then went 12th overall to Oklahoma City in June. Contract fights following a player across systems are an NBA preseason genre of their own; this desk explained the Exhibit 10 mechanics behind Dalen Terry’s 43-minute audition last week, and Mara’s version is the international edition, with a federation instead of a G League affiliate holding the pen.

How has Mara played this preseason?

Like a player a team would fight paperwork over. He appeared in all five of the Thunder’s preseason games and averaged 13.4 points, 7.6 rebounds and 2.8 assists while shooting 78.8 percent from the field, Rookie Wire reports, including a 22-point game on October 7. For The Win’s per-36-minute line underlines why Oklahoma City is unbothered by the noise: the production is that of a rotation centre already, in his first month. Rookies forcing their way into an opener is its own story this week, from Yaxel Lendeborg being handed a Doncic assignment he never got to attempt to the rookies who break things in practice, as Naji Marshall did to a rim and a chair in Macao.

Will he play in Tuesday’s opener?

On the Thunder’s reading, yes. Oklahoma City wrapped its preseason on Thursday and opens the regular season on Tuesday against the Spurs at the Frost Bank Center, Eurohoops reports, with Mara expected to be available for coach Mark Daigneault, Rookie Wire reports. That expectation is also a legal position: dressing him is the club acting on its advice. What would change the picture is a ruling, from FIBA or the league, or a settlement that prices the release Zaragoza has been seeking since 2023. Until one of those lands, the most consequential European transfer of the NBA’s opening week is a form one club says was never filed and the other says never had to be.

What happened on debut night?

He played, on the terms the Thunder described. Mara logged 11:43 in Oklahoma City’s 116-104 win at San Antonio on Tuesday, scoring seven points on 3 of 4 shooting with two rebounds, one assist and one block, and a plus-minus of +9. His sequence of the night came midway through the third quarter: a block on Victor Wembanyama at the rim, then, about nine seconds later, an alley-oop dunk at the other end off an Ajay Mitchell pass, ClutchPoints reports. Sportsnet’s game report records the same block from the other side, noting that one of Wembanyama’s missed alley-oop attempts was blocked by the 7-foot-3 rookie. The debut was not uninterrupted. Late in the first quarter Mara rolled an ankle and was seen clutching it before the commercial break, Heavy reports. He returned after the break, walked it off and played the rest of his minutes, including the third quarter sequence. No source checked on Tuesday night stated a diagnosis or a severity, and this page reports the roll and the return and nothing more. The game itself turned heated in the second quarter, when a scuffle between the Spurs and Thunder produced a Flagrant 1 and four technical fouls. What has not happened, as of Tuesday night, is any public reaction from Zaragoza, FIBA or the Spanish federation to Mara taking the court. The Thunder have now acted on their reading of the rules in a regular season game. Whether Zaragoza treats his appearance as the breach it warned about, and files or settles, is the dispute’s next step.

The club announced Friday it has not received an international transfer request, claims Mara is under contract for the 2026-27 season, and says it would oppose a transfer until a financial settlement over his departure is reached, Rookie Wire reports. Eurohoops reports the club warned the NBA, the Thunder, FIBA and the Spanish federation that he needs a formal Letter of Clearance.
