The red card took seconds. The sentence will be written by two phrases in a referee’s report. Facundo Bernal headbutted Lamine Yamal twice as Real Betis’ home game against Barcelona boiled over on Saturday, and because Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea recorded that it happened “while the ball was not in play”, the Betis midfielder is looking at four to 12 matches on the sidelines rather than the two or three an ordinary violent-conduct dismissal carries.
Update, October 21, 2026: The committee has decided. Bernal’s ban is four matches, the minimum the tariff allows, and the sections below on the decision, the appeal and the fixtures have been added and the closing section replaced.
What happened in the 54th minute?
Betis had just come back into the game. Yamal had scored a curling opener in the 10th minute and then set up Gabriel Jesus at 51 minutes, and when Abde Ezzalzouli made it 3-2 in the 53rd, La Cartuja believed again, FotMob reports. The celebrations ran into a confrontation over a heavy challenge on Fermin Lopez. Yamal stepped in for his team-mate, and Bernal grabbed him by the neck and headbutted him twice in succession in the face, according to the referee’s report quoted by Yardbarker. Bernal was sent off, Yamal was booked, and a match Betis were still chasing ended as a contest: Eric Garcia and Dani Olmo made it 5-2.
Why does the referee’s wording matter so much?
Because the disciplinary code prices the same act differently depending on when it happens. Article 103 covers an assault on another person, without injury, committed while play is stopped or away from the ball, and it carries four to 12 matches, Yardbarker’s account of the report explains. Article 130, the during-play violence route, carries two to three. The report closes the second door almost by name: it records the grab, the two headbutts and the dead ball. It also records that Yamal did not require medical assistance and completed the match, which keeps Bernal out of the six-to-15 band that an injury would have triggered. A week ago the same code produced the opposite arithmetic, when Vinicius Junior’s hair pull was priced under Article 130.2 and pointed at two to three matches. Bernal’s report points the other way.
What lit the fuse earlier in the match?
A disallowed goal good enough to be remembered on its own. Betis thought Giovani Lo Celso had levelled at 2-2 before half-time with a volley on the turn from outside the box that flew into the top corner. VAR sent the referee back to a handball by Cucho Hernandez in the build-up, and the goal came off the board, Khelnow reports. The home bench’s anger at that review is part of the same report: it records an incident involving the Betis bench and the fourth official in which a kicked ball struck the official’s leg and caused a slight injury, Yardbarker reports. By the time Abde scored, the stadium had been simmering for an hour.
How does this compare with the season’s other headbutt red?
It is the second headbutt dismissal in two days of European football, and the two cases split on the same question. On Saturday in England, Yehor Yarmolyuk was sent off for a headbutting action on Jeremy Jacquet before a corner was taken, which is why Brentford conceded a red card but no penalty. Bernal’s offence also happened with the ball dead, after a goal rather than before a corner. The English case will be settled by the standard violent-conduct tariff. The contact family is wider than headbutts this autumn: two weeks ago Athenea del Castillo was sent off for pulling a USWNT player’s hair six seconds from full time, an offence that sits in the same violent-conduct drawer and drew the same straight red. The Spanish one now sits with a committee reading a report that uses the word assault’s legal neighbourhood, in a league where Real Madrid and the league president spent the same weekend demanding each other’s removal from the story.
What ban did the committee give Bernal?
Four matches, the lowest the tariff allows. The RFEF Disciplinary Committee published its decision on Wednesday, October 21, and set the suspension at the bottom of Article 103’s four-to-12 range for aggression against an opponent. Reuters reports that the ban covers the league fixtures against Celta Vigo, Malaga and Elche and the Seville derby against Sevilla on November 22. IANS, carrying the same decision, lists a Copa del Rey tie at Navalcarnero as the fourth match instead of the derby. The two reports agree on the first three fixtures and disagree on the fourth, and Betis’s own fixture order will settle which list is right.
The decision, as All Football reproduces it from the resolution, explains the number. Betis argued the referee’s report contained a clear objective error and, failing that, that the act was mere violence under a lesser article with a provocation mitigation. The committee rejected both arguments: the club’s own video showed Bernal grabbing Yamal by the neck and headbutting his face twice while play was stopped, which is aggression under Article 103.1, and the absence of injury did not change that classification. Four matches is the minimum under that article, so the mitigation Betis raised did not need evaluating.
Will Betis appeal, and what happened to Fajardo?
Both things are reported, and they are not the same step. The appeal Betis filed to the committee has already been decided, against them, inside this resolution. Reuters and IANS both report Betis announcing a further appeal, which goes to the Appeals Committee above the disciplinary body and does not suspend the ban unless an order says otherwise. Until an appeal body rules, the four matches stand.
The committee’s sanctions list also gives Betis sporting director Manu Fajardo a two-match suspension and a fine for conduct contrary to good sporting order connected to the match, Reuters reports, and records that coach Manuel Pellegrini was only cautioned. Yamal, for his part, was booked for pushing Bernal in the same incident, and nothing further came of his part in it.
What happens next for Bernal and Betis?
The ban starts with Betis’s next match. The further appeal, if Betis file it as announced, is this page’s next update trigger, along with the club’s confirmed fixture list for the four matches. The derby date is the sting in the decision: on Reuters’ list, the fourth match Bernal misses is Sevilla at home on November 22, the fixture Betis would least want him absent for, and the appeal is now the only route that changes that. For Barcelona, Saturday’s night still belonged to Yamal: a goal, an assist, six completed dribbles against a team total of six, and a booking collected while being headbutted, FotMob reports. The win was Barcelona’s ninth in nine league games, equalling the opening run Real Madrid set in 1968-69, 7M Sport reports.
Frequently asked questions
What did Bernal do to Yamal?+
In the 54th minute, seconds after Abde Ezzalzouli had cut Barcelona's lead to 3-2, a confrontation broke out around a heavy challenge on Fermin Lopez. The referee's report says Bernal grabbed Yamal by the neck and headbutted him twice in succession in the face while the ball was not in play. Bernal was shown a straight red card and Yamal was booked for his part in the altercation, FotMob and 7M Sport report.
What ban did Bernal get?+
Four matches, imposed by the RFEF Disciplinary Committee on October 21, 2026, plus a fine. It is the minimum under Article 103.1, which allows four to 12 matches for aggression against an opponent. The committee rejected Betis's appeal, held that the club's own video confirmed the referee's report, and kept the aggression classification, which is why the sanction sits at the minimum.
Which matches does Bernal miss?+
Celta Vigo, Malaga and Elche in LaLiga appear on both wire lists. Reuters lists the fourth match as the Seville derby against Sevilla on November 22; IANS lists a Copa del Rey tie at Navalcarnero instead. The club's fixture order will confirm which list is right.
Is Betis appealing the ban?+
Betis already appealed to the disciplinary committee and lost: the resolution published on Wednesday rejects that appeal. Reuters and IANS both report the club announcing a further appeal to the Appeals Committee above it. The four matches stand unless that further appeal succeeds.
What was the final score and who scored?+
Barcelona won 5-2 at La Cartuja. Yamal opened the scoring in the 10th minute and set up Gabriel Jesus at 51 minutes, Valentin Gomez equalised in the 27th, Rodri headed Barcelona back in front in the 41st with his first goal for the club, and Abde made it 3-2 in the 53rd. After the red card, Eric Garcia scored in the 62nd minute and Dani Olmo in the 81st, FotMob reports.
What happened to Lo Celso's goal?+
Betis thought they had levelled at 2-2 before half-time when Giovani Lo Celso volleyed in from distance, one of the best strikes of the season so far. VAR sent the referee to check a handball by Cucho Hernandez in the build-up and the goal was disallowed, to the fury of the home bench, Khelnow and FotMob report.
Did the referee's report mention anyone else?+
Yes. The report also recorded an incident after the first-half VAR review involving the Betis bench and the fourth official, in which a kicked ball struck the official's leg and caused a slight injury, Yardbarker reports. Whether that produces a personal sanction or a fine for the club depends on the registration status of the staff member involved.
What does the win do for Barcelona?+
It keeps their perfect start intact. Nine wins from nine league games equals the best opening run in LaLiga history, the nine straight wins Real Madrid recorded at the start of the 1968-69 season, 7M Sport reports. Yamal finished with a goal and an assist and completed six dribbles, as many as the entire Betis team combined, FotMob reports.
