What Is an Alley-Oop in Basketball? Pass, Lob, and Finish
On this page5
TL;DR
The passer throws the ball above or near the rim, and a teammate catches it before landing to score. The finish may be a dunk or layup, and the play can occur in transition or half court.
How the play develops
The receiver creates separation with a cut, screen or backdoor route. The passer leads the run rather than simply throwing at the rim, so the catch arrives in the receiver’s jumping window.
Lob versus alley-oop
Every alley-oop uses a lob-like pass, but not every lob is an alley-oop. If the receiver catches the ball and lands without finishing immediately, the play may simply be a lob entry or pass.
Legal scoring details
The receiver must avoid traveling and offensive goaltending. The ball may be caught and dunked in one motion, but a player cannot touch the rim illegally before the ball is released.
Defending the play
Defenders protect the rim, communicate on cuts and avoid losing the passer’s lane. Switching a screen without covering the back cut is a common way to concede an alley-oop.
